It's not easy to create original sci-fi designs. Having a chance to work on a couple of Destiny 2 cinematic cutscenes I got to appreciate something about the developer of the game, Bungie. That they dare to commit to sometimes seemingly crazy ideas and they make them work. While in this specific trailer, assets are closer to man-made items, some of the designs in Destiny two I find quite original. I think this combination of familiarity and originality is what makes the art style successful.
On these projects I was responsible for handling the props, including; two rifles, one pistol and a special device, we called "radio". (Although I assume they are using much more advanced technology...well, you never know in a Destiny 2 world). With the guns, I didn't start from scratch. I was provided with the game assets, which then I upressed in modelling and recreated the textures based on the original asset. The "Radio" device was created from scratch. It's sometimes heartbreaking to not see all the fingerprints and other surface treatments I've worked so hard to achieve. But this is show business. I guess it shows the level of care our team gives to every single assets.
